    Sweden's first

    gin distillery

It all started back in 1999 when Jon Hillgren went to London together with a few friends to start working as bartenders. He quickly discovered gin and instantly fell in love with it. During the years that followed, his passion for the drink evolved into gin crafting and after copious amounts of gin tasting, academic studies and technical visits to distilleries around the world, Jon finally founded the Hernö Gin Distillery in 2011. At the time it was Sweden’s first dedicated gin distillery and the world’s northernmost gin distillery. As testament to Jon’s dedication and passion for creating beautiful gin, he has already been crowned Gin Grand Master twice since releasing his first gin in 2012.

  • Herno Building

The distillery is located in the north of Sweden in the village of Dala, just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland. As part of the UNESCO world heritage area called The High Coast, it is an area of real natural beauty. Jon takes inspiration from this surrounding beauty to create a truly organic, artisanal gin with the finest botanticals. To stay true to its Swedish heritage, the distillery is built in a traditional Swedish manor in wood painted in red and white. British Airway’s in-fight magazine High Life describes it as the best distillery in the world to taste gin.

  • Herno Machinery

Hernö Gin is made with real zeal and a careful eye that follows through from the very start. Made with only natural and certified organic botanticals, Jon distils their wheat spirit twice. The first time it becomes vodka, but the second time around it becomes gin!
Before the second distillation the spirit is macerated with juniper and coriander for 18 hours the other botanticals are added in and the whole batch is distilled. Such is Jon’s dedication to taste and quality; he uses the uncompromising single-shot distillation method per batch and then cuts the batch with water drawn from their own well – arguably the purest water on the planet! Each 500ml bottle is hand-labelled and signed by Jon.

"We’re not going to sit on the fence with Hernö Gin – we absolutely love everything about it; the backstory, the beautiful location of the distillery, the taste, the smell – everything."

Given where Jon first fell in love with gin, it is quite fitting that HERNÖ GIN is a smooth London Dry Gin, produced using the one-shot maceration distillation process – a process that has all but disappeared from production among all the major gin brands. This ‘one-shot’method produces an incredibly flavoursome and refreshing gin, where the botanical flavours and aromas are vibrant in the mouth and to the nose.

To heighten the pleasure even more, HERNÖ GIN is astonishingly smooth giving testament to only the finest quality ingredients being used at every step of the production process. The lingon berries and meadowsweet really push a floral flavour, which is complimented perfectly with the strong citrus infusion, before a slightly spicy finish leaves the mouth feeling warm and refreshed.

  • Tasting Notes

Round juniper character, fresh citrus notes and a floral complexity.
Rich and lightly oily texture. Fresh, crunchy green, spicy notes of coriander. A mellow sweetness combined with vanilla and cassia bark.
Long lasting citrus and juniper with a hint of black pepper.
